What does a Muffler do?

A muffler's primary purpose, is as the name implies; to muffle the sound of the engine. Because motorcycle engines are more powerful than car engine, they create a lot more noise. In order to keep them street legal, they need mufflers to be installed on every motorcycle in order to dampen the engine noise. Mufflers also optimize the lifetime and performance of the engine. They have been designed to act as an acoustic device in order to reduce sound pressure that will be created by an engine. They use different techniques to silence or muffle the engine's noise, such as absorptive silencing, reactive silencing and shell damping. Although it muffles the noise, it may restrict the exhaust gas flow, which may in turn create back pressure. Back pressure can decrease your engine's efficiency. The most common problems of a muffler are rust and holes/loose parts. Due to collected water in the exhaust system, your muffler may rust. When you bike hits potholes or rocks are shot up from the ground, a crack in your muffler may appear.

What happens if you don't use a Muffler?

Not only is not using a muffler illegal but can also disturb animals and humans. Not using a Muffler can also cause engine damage as well as backfiring. When you remove your muffler you may increase your chances of burning exhaust valves, or melting your boots and plastics surrounding the area.

Mufflers can be made from many different materials such as carbon fibre, stainless steel and aluminium. Each material has its own advantages as well as disadvantages. Stainless steel is cheaper but heavier, whereas titanium is very expensive but much lighter. Titanium can come in a lighter color or black, depending on preference. Carbon fibre is generally not recommended, as it is a very delicate material. Mufflers also come in many different designs, the rider may choose from oval or round shapes, as well as unique shapes specifically chosen by the rider. Before acquiring a new muffler, make sure it adheres to all noise and pollution regulations.
