Clutch Cable

What is a clutch cable and what does it do?

The clutch cable is part of the vehicle transmission. Namely all components that intervene in the guidance and implementation of the rotary motion from the engine to the drive wheels. The transmission concerns an essential part, namely the clutch cable. The clutch is the mechanism responsible for connecting and disconnecting the power of the engine crankshaft to the gears (of the transmission). The clutch cable is the component that carries the driver's input to the interior of the clutch.

The cable itself is designed to slide easily into the housing with connectors at each end. The housing also has a rigid inner layer that is flexible yet rigid enough to support the cable when used to actuate the clutch.

A clutch cable system is the simplest form of the clutch mechanism operation and replaces and streamlines older linkage designs (which relied on multiple moving parts to function properly) and allows for smoother operation. A well-functioning clutch cable allows the vehicle to shift gears smoothly and easily.  Clutch cables, therefore, play a crucial role in ensuring optimal performance and rider comfort. While not as smooth or reliable as hydraulic systems, cable configurations are preferred by many people for their ease of installation, ability to customize applications, simple design, and lack of expensive parts. Why do I need to change my clutch cable?

If you've ever ridden a motorcycle or car with a damaged clutch cable, you know the importance of replacing it. Over time, standard clutch cables often suffer from one of two problems that make the clutch difficult to operate and reduce rider comfort and control:

The first is that they break, usually, at either end of the train The constant tension of the cable sliding in and out of the housing causes the cable to wear and fray, eventually leading to breakage. The second problem is damaged wire covers due to proximity to the exhaust or moving parts. Damaged housings can cause the cable to buckle and corrode, which can cause cables to break or stick together.

How do I know if I need to replace the clutch cable?

A good cable should last at least a few years and maybe much, much longer, but it's a good idea to check the cable as part of your regular maintenance. A common sign that the clutch cable is damaged and needs to be replaced is a stiff clutch lever or inconsistent gear changes.

If a cable starts to fail, it's only a matter of time before it fails. Before completely replacing the cable, as part of its maintenance, it is also worth checking whether the cable needs to be lubricated, as this can also make the lever stiff.
